UK Keeps Diplomatic Presence in East Jerusalem Amid Staff Changes
By Rhyter Times Desk · 2h ago
The United Kingdom will maintain operations at its diplomatic post in East Jerusalem despite personnel changes, according to reports from the BBC and Al Jazeera. UK Foreign Minister Ed Miliband confirmed that the facility will remain open to provide vital services.
Accounts differ regarding the characterization of the shift. The BBC reported that Israel claims most British diplomats will leave the consulate, connecting the move to an announcement Israel made in September indicating it would retaliate against UK sanctions placed on illegal West Bank settlements. Al Jazeera reported that the UK has redesignated the consulate as a mission, noting that certain diplomats will stay and quoting Miliband confirming that the building will not close.
